Om (Aum)

What does Om mean?

In Hinduism, Om (also spelled Aum) is a Hindu sacred sound that is considered the greatest of all mantras. The syllable Om is composed of the three sounds a-u-m (in Sanskrit, the vowels a and u combine to become o) and the symbol's threefold nature is central to its meaning. It represent several important triads:
- The three worlds - earth, atmosphere, and heaven
- The three major Hindu gods - Brahma, Vishnu, and Siva
- The three sacred Vedic scriptures - Rg, Yajur, and Sama

Thus Om mystically embodies the essence of the entire universe. This meaning is further deepened by the Indian philosophical belief that God first created sound and the universe arose from it. As the most sacred sound, Om is the root of the universe and everything that exists and it continues to hold everything together.

Om in Hindu culture

The syllable is discussed in a number of the Upanishads, which are the texts of philosophical speculation, and it forms the entire subject matter of one, the Mandukya.
AUM is a bow, the arrow is the self, And Brahman (Absolute Reality) is said to be the mark. (Mandukya Upanishad) The essence of all beings is the earth. The essence of the earth is water. The essence of water is the plant. The essence of the plant is man. The essence of man is speech. The essence of speech is the Rigveda. The essence of Rigveda is the Samveda. The essence of Samveda is OM. (Chandogya Upanishad) All those activities which people start with uttering the syllable OM do not fail to bear fruit. (Shankaracharya's Commentary on the Taittriya Upanishad 1.8.1) In the Puranas the syllable Om became associated in various ways with the major Hindu devotional sects. Saivites mark the lingam (a symbol of Shiva) with the symbol for Om, while Vaishnavites identify the three sounds as referring to the trinity of Vishnu, his wife Sri, and the worshiper.
Om is spoken at the beginning and the end of Hindu mantras, prayers, and meditations and is frequently used in Buddhist and Jain rituals as well. Om is used in the practice of Yoga and is related to techniques of auditory meditation.
From the 6th century, the written symbol of Om was used to mark the beginning of a text in a manuscript or an inscription. Om Parvat, a sacred peak at 6191m in the Indian Himalayas, is revered for its snow deposition pattern that resembles Om.

More Detailed Symbolism

With its threefold nature, special shape and unique sound, Om lends itself to a variety of detailed symbolic interpretations. The symbol of AUM consists of three curves (curves 1, 2, and 3), one semicircle (curve 4), and a dot.
The large lower curve 1 symbolizes the waking state (jagrat), in this state the consciousness is turned outwards through the gates of the senses. The larger size signifies that this is the most common ('majority') state of the human consciousness.
The upper curve 2 denotes the state of deep sleep (sushupti) or the unconscious state. This is a state where the sleeper desires nothing nor beholds any dream.
The middle curve 3 (which lies between deep sleep and the waking state) signifies the dream state (swapna). In this state the consciousness of the individual is turned inwards, and the dreaming self beholds an enthralling view of the world behind the lids of the eyes.
These are the three states of an individual's consciousness, and since Indian mystic thought believes the entire manifested reality to spring from this consciousness, these three curves therefore represent the entire physical phenomenon.
The dot signifies the fourth state of consciousness, known in Sanskrit as turiya. In this state the consciousness looks neither outwards nor inwards, nor the two together. It signifies the coming to rest of all differentiated, relative existence This utterly quiet, peaceful and blissful state is the ultimate aim of all spiritual activity. This Absolute (non-relative) state illuminates the other three states.
Finally, the semi circle symbolizes maya and separates the dot from the other three curves. Thus it is the illusion of maya that prevents us from the realization of this highest state of bliss.
The semi circle is open at the top, and when ideally drawn does not touch the dot. This means that this highest state is not affected by maya. Maya only affects the manifested phenomenon. This effect is that of preventing the seeker from reaching his ultimate goal, the realization of the One, all-pervading, unmanifest, Absolute principle. In this manner, the form of OM represents both the unmanifest and the manifest, the noumenon and the phenomenon.
As a sacred sound also, the pronunciation of the three-syllabled AUM is open to a rich logical analysis. The first alphabet A is regarded as the primal sound, independent of cultural contexts. It is produced at the back of the open mouth, and is therefore said to include, and to be included in, every other sound produced by the human vocal organs. Indeed A is the first letter of the Sanskrit alphabet.
The open mouth of A moves toward the closure of M. Between is U, formed of the openness of A but shaped by the closing lips. Here it must be recalled that as interpreted in relation to the three curves, the three syllables making up AUM are susceptible to the same metaphorical decipherment. The dream state (symbolized by U), lies between the waking state (A) and the state of deep sleep (M). Indeed a dream is but the compound of the consciousness of waking life shaped by the unconsciousness of sleep.
AUM thus also encompasses within itself the complete alphabet, since its utterance proceeds from the back of the mouth (A), travelling in between (U), and finally reaching the lips (M). Now all alphabets can be classified under various heads depending upon the area of the mouth from which they are uttered. The two ends between which the complete alphabet oscillates are the back of the mouth to the lips; both embraced in the simple act of uttering of AUM.
The last part of the sound AUM (the M) known as ma or makar, when pronounced makes the lips close. This is like locking the door to the outside world and instead reaching deep inside our own selves, in search for the Ultimate truth.
But over and above the threefold nature of OM as a sacred sound is the invisible fourth dimension which cannot be distinguished by our sense organs restricted as they are to material observations. This fourth state is the unutterable, soundless silence that follows the uttering of OM. A quieting down of all the differentiated manifestations, i.e. a peaceful-blissful and non-dual state. Indeed this is the state symbolized by the dot in the traditional iconography of AUM.
The threefold symbolism of OM is comprehensible to the most 'ordinary' of us humans, realizable both on the intuitive and objective level. This is responsible for its widespread popularity and acceptance. That this symbolism extends over the entire spectrum of the manifested universe makes it a veritable fount of spirituality. Some of these symbolic equivalents are:
- Colors : Red, White, and Black. - Seasons : Spring, Summer, and Winter. - Periods : Morning, Midday, and Evening. - States : Waking-consciousness (jagriti), Dream (svapna), and deep-sleep (sushupti). - Spheres : Earthly, Heavenly, and Intermediary. - Poetic Meters : Gayatri (24 syllables), Trishtubh (44 syllables), and Jagati (48 syllables). - Veda : Rigveda (knowledge of the meters), Yajurveda (knowledge of contents), Samaveda (knowledge of extension). - Elemental Deity : Fire (Agni), Sun (Aditya), Wind (Vayu). - Manifestation of Speech : Voice (vak), Mind (manas), Breath (prana). - Priestly Function : Making offering, Performing ritual, and Singing. - Tendencies : Revolving, Cohesive, and Disintegrating. - Quality : Energy (rajas), Purity (sattva), and Ignorance (tamas). - Ritual fire : Of the home, of the Ancestors, and of Invocation. - Goddess : Amba, Ambika, and Ambalika. - Gods : Of the elements (Vasus), of the sky (Adityas), of the sphere-of-space (Rudras). - Deity : Brahma, Vishnu, Shiva. - Action : Creation, Preservation, and Destruction. - Power : of Action (kriya), of Knowledge (jnana), and of Will (iccha). - Man : Body, Soul, and Spirit. - Time : Past, Present, and Future. - Stages of Existence : Birth, Life, and Death. - Phases of the Moon : Waxing, Full, and Waning. - Godhead : Father, Mother, and Son. - Alchemy : Sulphur, Quicksilver, and Salt. - Buddhism : the Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha (three jewels of Buddhism). - Qabalism : Male, Female, and the Uniting intelligence. - Japanese Thought : Mirror, Sword, and Jewel. - Divine Attributes : Truth, Courage, and Compassion.
According to Indian spiritual sciences, God first created sound, and from these sound frequencies came the phenomenal world. Our total existence is constituted of these primal sounds, which give rise to mantras when organized by a desire to communicate, manifest, invoke or materialize. Matter itself is said to have proceeded from sound and OM is said to be the most sacred of all sounds. It is the syllable which preceded the universe and from which the gods were created. It is the "root" syllable (mula mantra), the cosmic vibration that holds together the atoms of the world and heavens. Indeed the Upanishads say that AUM is god in the form of sound. Thus OM is the first part of the most important mantras in both Buddhism and Hinduism, e.g. Om Namoh Shivai and Om Mani Padme Hum.
Another ancient text equates AUM with an arrow, laid upon the bow of the human body (the breath), which after penetrating the darkness of ignorance finds its mark, namely the lighted domain of True Knowledge. Just as a spider climbs up its thread and gains freedom, so the yogis climb towards liberation by the syllable OM.

The Story Of Amarnath Ji

The story begins from the quest of Goddess Parvati when she asks her husband Lord Shiva to tell her why he wore a Maala with Munds (Mund Maala - bead of heads). Lord Shiva replies that every time she(Parvati) is born, he adds a head to the Maala he is wearing.
Parvati enquires,My Lord, my body is destroyed every time  and I die again and again, but you are Immortal. Please let me know the secret of this.” Lord Shiva replies that he is immortal due to Amar Katha and whoever knows that Katha becomes Immortal. When Goddess Parvati insists on knowing the story then Lord Shiva explains to her that this story is a secret and no one knows this and even Gods do not know about this story and hence, when their virtues are over, they have to leave their position and take rebirth to gain virtues. It is only the Tridevs (Brahma, Vishnu and Mahesh) that know this sacred story and are immortal.
But when Parvati insists more vehemently, Lord Shiva assures her of telling the Amar Katha sometime. But the goddess does not let go and on her persistent demand to know the secret of Immortality, Lord Shiva selects a hidden place (Amarnath Cave) where no living being could listen to this secret story.
On way to Amarnath Cave, Lord Shiva leaves Nandi, The Bull, at Pahalgam (Bail Gaon). At Chandanwari, he releases the Moon from his hair (Jataon). On the banks of Lake Sheshnag, he releases his snakes. At Mahagunas Parvat (Mahaganesh Mountain), he leaves his son, Lord Ganesha. At Panjtarni, Lord Shiva leaves behind the five elements-  Earth, Water, Air, Fire and Sky. As a symbol of sacrificing the earthly world, Lord Shiva performed the Tandava Dance. Then, finally, Lord Shiva entered the Holy Amarnath Cave along with Parvati. Lord Shiva then took his Samadhi on the Deer Skin.
Lord Shiva started telling the story to Mata Parvati but she sleeps in between as the story was very long and she was tired of the journey. Meanwhile, two white pigeons were listening to the story and were making cooing sound which made Shiva feel that Mata Parvati is still listening to the story and he continued telling it. In this way, both the Pigeons heard the story of being immortal.
After ending the story, when Lord Shiva saw that Parvati was sleeping, He wondered who was making the cooing sounds when he was narrating the story. He then discovered the two pigeons and became angry and tried to kill them but the pigeons said that if you will kill us then the legend of this story shall exist no more. Then Lord Shiva left them alive and blessed that they will reside at this place as a symbol of Lord Shiv and Goddess Parvati. It is said that even today the devotees often see a pair of  pigeons here.
It is said that only those reach Amarnath Dham who are blessed by Baba Bhole Nath. Even reaching here is a great virtue. Person sighting and worshipping Baba Himani reaches heaven after this mortal life.

GAJ KESARI YOGA
According to its definition prevalent in Vedic Jyotish, when Jupiter is in Kendra from Moon which means when Jupiter is in house number 1, 4, 7 or 10 from Moon, a Gaj Kesari Yog is said to be formed in the horoscope which can bless the native with great fame, great skills, success, wealth and many other things. Now as we know that there are only 12 houses in a horoscope and Jupiter can be present in any one of these 12 houses, when we count from the house of placement of Moon, the presence of Jupiter in 4 out of 12 houses will lead to the formation of Gaj Kesari Yog in the horoscope which means that randomly, every third person is having a Gaj Kesari Yog in his horoscope since there are only 12 houses in a horoscope and the probability of Jupiter being placed in any one of 4 specific house out of 12 houses is one third. Analyzing this definition further, we know that Moon transits a sign for 2 and a half days approximately and since the formation of Gaj Kesari Yog is decided by the placement of Jupiter from Moon, a Gaj Kesari Yog once formed stays active for about 2 and a half days which means that all the people born all around the world during these 2 and a half days will have a Gaj Kesari Yog in their horoscope. To simplify this fact, let us assume that Jupiter is present in Aries at a time and as we know that Jupiter stays in a sign for about a year, so when Moon enters in any of the signs namely Aries, Cancer, Libra or Capricorn, a Gaj Kesari Yog will be formed as Jupiter will be in house 1, 10, 7 and 4 from Moon in these cases. Since Moon stays in a sign for 2 and a half days and Jupiter does not change its sign fast, it means that a Gaj Kesari Yog will be active continuously for 2 and a half days.
The fact that a Gaj Kesari Yog is found in almost every third horoscope and the fact that this Yog remains activated for about 2 and a half days are very hard to justify practically as the good results associated with Gaj Kesari Yog are not so common which can be found in every third person and any one of a very good Yoga in Vedic astrology does not remain activated continuously even for an hour, let alone 2 and a half days. This means that there are more conditions for the formation of Gaj Kesari Yog in a horoscope than the one mentioned in prevalent definition of this yog and we will now discuss about these conditions. To start with, both Jupiter and Moon should be working benefic in the horoscope for the formation of a Gaj Kesari Yog in the horoscope and if anyone or both of these planets are working malefic in a horoscope, a Gaj Kesari Yog will not be formed in the horoscope and the malefic planet will afflict the benefic planet which will cause problems instead of benefits. For example, if Moon and Jupiter are present in the same house of a horoscope, Moon is banefic but Jupiter is malefic, a Gaj Kesari Yog will not be formed in this case but this combination of a malefic Jupiter with a banefic Moon will bring problems which will revolve around the significances of Moon. The worst kind of combination can happen when both Moon and Jupiter are working malefic in a horoscope as in this case, both the planets will suffer from the malefic effect of the other planet and no Gaj Kesari Yog will be formed in the horoscope.
And even when a Gaj Kesari Yog is actually formed in the horoscope, its results will not be the same for different natives and they will change considerably according to the horoscopes of these natives. For example, a Gaj Kesari Yog formed due to the presence of a benefic Jupiter and Moon in Cancer sign is generally much stronger than a Gaj Kesari Yog formed due to the presence of a benefic Jupiter and Moon in Scorpio or Capricorn as Moon and Jupiter respectively are debilitated in these signs and hence they cannot contribute much towards this yog. Similarly a Gaj Kesari Yog formed due to presence of a benefic Jupiter and Moon in the same house is likely to be stronger than the Gaj Kesari Yog formed due to presence of benefic Jupiter in 7th house from Moon which is in turn stronger than the one formed with benefic Jupiter in 4th house from Moon which is stronger than the Gaj Kesari Yog formed with Jupiter in 10th house from Moon. The impact of other positive and negative planets on Jupiter, Moon and Gaj Kesari Yog itself should also be analyzed as this impact can considerably increase or decrease the strength of this yog. The placement of Jupiter and Moon in different signs and different house of a horoscope can also make a great difference in net resultant of Gaj Kesari Yog and the overall tone of the horoscope should also be checked properly before predicting the good effects of Gaj Kesari Yog in a horoscope.

The mirackle of coconut is whenever it falls on ground it never falls on any ones head even a person is standing under coconut tree. Very rarely if it falls on any ones head also its said that he is going to live long life more than 100 years.

Lord Shiv and Ganesha story

One day as a child when lord Ganesha was playing he was attracted by his fathers third eye and he went to touch it. Lord Shiv stoed him and said I am going to give you a special ball to play and thhus coconut came on earth which also has 3 eyes. So coconut is very special to Lord Ganesha and coconut is offered to him.
Next, the breaking of coconut symbolizes the breaking of the ego. The coconut represents the human body and before the Lord it is shattered – breaking the ‘aham’ or ego and symbolically total surrendering and merging with the Brahman – supreme soul.
Coconut is also an important aspect in Kalasha or Poorna Kumba. Apart from this there are numerous other symbolic meaning to the coconut. Most of them revolve around its appearance like the three eyes on the coconut represent the three eyes of Lord Shiva.

The coconut tree has erect graceful gray colored trunk, swollen at the base and grows slightly curved. The truck is ringed due to old leaf scars and is smooth. The coconut tree is topped by a crown composed of about 25 to 30 pinnate feather-like leaves that are about 6 feet wide and 18 feet long. There are about 200 leaflets in every leaf, colored yellow green when young and as it matures turned to brown. The coconut leaves are shed as it grows old and young new shoots grows from the top most of the crown.
Coconut flowers start to bloom when the coconut is about 4 to 6 years of age. The coconut flowers are yellow and are sweet scented. The flowers grow in clusters from a branched stalked with both male and female flowers growing from the same inflorescence.
The flower buds turned to coconut fruits that grow to a large nut like shape about 10 inches in diameter and about 12 inches in length. The fruit is commonly called as coconut. The coconut has a smooth hard protective outer layer, usually green, but others may be pale yellow, silver-gold or brown depending on variety and age. Coconut fruit has a husk of about 1 to 2 inches thick with an inner hollow round seed of about 5 to 7 inches in diameter. The coconut seed has a hard shell that when cracked open will reveal a layer of white edible meat and about a glassful of sweet watery coconut milk. A matured coconut tree can produce about 50 to 200 coconuts per year depending on variety and growing conditions.
In most Pacific islanders, the coconut is called the tree of life for its versatility of use. Almost every part of the coconut tree has good use as seen in many domestic, commercial and industrial applications.
Coconut is highly nutritious, rich in fiber, vitamins, and minerals. Coconut offers a lot of health benefits beside from its nutritional value. Coconut meat, coconut water and the coconut oil are used as food and in food preparations. The coconut oil is also widely used in traditional medicine as a cure all medicine.
