ASHOKA TREE
Ashoka is one of the most legendary and sacred trees of India, and one of the most fascinating flowers in the Indian range of flower essences. It belongs to Caesalpaeniaceae family. It is a very handsome, small, erect evergreen tree, with deep green foliage and very fragrant, bright orange-yellow flowers, which later turn red. The flowering season is around April and May. It is found in central and eastern Himalayas as well as on the west coast of Bombay.Ashoka is a Sanskrit word meaning without grief or that which gives no grief. Of course, the tree has many other names in local languages as well. One such name means the tree of love blossoms. The Hindus regard it as sacred, being dedicated to Kama Deva, God of Love. The tree is a symbol of love. Its beautiful, delicately perfumed flowers are used in temple decoration. There are also festivals associated with this flower. Lord Buddha was born under the Ashoka tree, so it is planted in Buddhist monasteries. 



Health Benefits and Therapeutic Uses of Ashoka Herb:
The Ashoka tree has many health benefits and has long been used in traditional Indian medicine as a key ingredient in various therapies and cures. Let us take a look at some of the therapeutic uses of the Ashoka herb.
  • Gynecology: One of the uses of the Ashoka herb is in the treatment of menstrual disorders associated with excessive bleeding, congestion, and pain. You can make use of the benefits of the Ashoka herb when there is dysmenorrhoea, abdominal pain, and uterine spasms. The Ashoka herb benefits the endometrium and uterine muscles and this makes it effective as a uterine tonic for irregular menstrual cycles and miscarriage. It is also effectively used in Ayurveda for clearing congestion from the Medas Dhatus and Mamsa, especially when there may be leucorrhoea, endometriosis, cysts, and fibroids from excess kapha and ama in the Artava Srotas.
  • The Ashoka herb also has a nourishing effect on the circulatory system, thereby making it an effective remedy in arrhythmia and cardiac weakness.
  • The Ashoka herb also helps in encouraging urine flow and thus helps in treating conditions that cause painful urination.
  • Dysentery: An extract of the Ashoka flower can be used to effectively treat hemorrhagic dysentery. The extract is made by grinding the flowers along with some water. Doses of 15–60 drops can be taken.
  • Piles: For internal piles, the bark of the Ashoka tree can be used. To prepare the decoction, take around 90 grams of the bark and boil it in 360 ml of water and 30 ml of milk until the entire quantity reduces to around 90 grams. Two to three doses of this can be taken each day.
  • Pain: The specific analgesic properties present in Ashoka can used to calm the nerves when they have been aggravated by the Vata.
  • Complexion: The Ashoka herb is also said to improve the complexion of skin. This herb can be used to obtain relief from burning sensations on the skin. It also helps to get rid of the toxins from the body. The Ashoka herb is also effective in purifying the blood naturally and in preventing skin allergies.
Other Uses
The other Ashoka tree uses include treating the sting from a scorpion. The bark of the tree is used for scorpion sting treatment. Dried Ashoka flowers can be helpful in treating diabetes

Bilva - Lord Shiva's Sacred Tree 

 

Mythological importance
Bilva or Aegle Marmelos is the embodiment of Lord Shiva himself and is one of the sacred tree symbols of Hinduism.
Maha Shivaratri is considered the most auspicious time to please Lord Shiva to gain his blessings. What is the simplest way of appeasing Lord Shiva? Offer him Bilva leaves.
The most terrible karma is destroyed when a Bilva leaf is offered to Lord Shiva. The unbelievable merits one receives on offering a single Bilva leaf to Lord Shiva are described in the 9 verses of the sacred hymn known as Bilvashtakam.
Just like Tulsi plant is sacred to Lord Krishna and Durva grass is sacred to Lord Ganesha, Bilva tree is sacred to Lord Shiva. Since the Bilva leaf has such significance in the worship of Lord Shiva, it is common to find Bilva trees cultivated in the vicinity of Shiva temples. The fruits were used in place of coconuts before large-scale rail transportation became available.
The Bilva tree in the Shiva Purana
According to the Shiva Purana (7 AD) the Bilva tree is the manifest form of Lord Shiva himself, while all the great tirthas (pilgrimage places) are said to reside at its base. One who worships the shivalingam while sitting under the Bilva, claims this great epic, and attains the state of Shiva. Washing the head by this tree is said to be the equivalent of bathing in all the sacred rivers. One who performs Bilva pooja with flowers and incense achieves Shiva loka, the abode of pure consciousness, and has happiness and prosperity bestowed upon them. The lighting of the deepak (lamp) before this tree bestows knowledge and enables the devotee to merge in Lord Shiva. The Shiva Purana also claims that if the devotee removes the new leaves from one of the branches of that tree and worships the tree with them, they will be freed from vice, while one who feeds a devotee under the Bilva will grow in virtue.

From the Hindu pantheism point of view this tree is the symbolic representation of Shiva, Parvati, Surya and Lakshmi- the Goddess of Wealth. It is said that no worship of Shiva is complete without offering Bel patra or Bilva leaf. These leaves on the lingam cool and refresh the heated deity. Its trifoliate leaf or tripatra symbolises the three functions-creation, preservation and destruction(Brahma,Vishnu and Mahesh )of the Lord as well as His three eyes.” The tri-foliate form of leaves symbolize the trident that Shiva holds in his right hand.

Quoting the Skanda Purana and explained the origin of Bilva tree, “One day while Parvati was resting some drops of sweat fell from her forehead on the mountain Mandara, from which grew the bel tree, Girija lives on the root of the tree, Maheswari on its shoulder, Dukshayani on its branches, Parvati among its leaves, Katyayani in its fruit, Gauri in its flowers while in thorns the numerous Saktis find a home. It is also believed that Lakshmi, the Goddess of Wealth, also lives in the bel tree.” Those who perform the puja of Shiva and Parvati devoutly, using the leaves, will be endowed with spiritual powers. The bilva leaves are-symbols of three Gunasaar –Sattva, Raja and Tama.

Really speaking Bilva is medicinally and religiously very powerful. On the one hand it acts as a boost to health and cure for many ailments; on the other hand it has great spiritual significance which permeates the Hindu way of life.

SHAMI TREE STHOTRAM The fact of the comprehensive success of the Pandavas in their endeavour has been extrapolated to the everyday ventures of the common man today. Even to this day, people exchange Shami leaves and wish each other victory in their own ventures and efforts. The following shloka is used, sometimes, to signify this:
 शमी शमयते पापम् शमी शत्रुविनाशिनी । अर्जुनस्य धनुर्धारी रामस्य प्रियदर्शिनी ॥ करिष्यमाणयात्राया यथाकालम् सुखम् मया । तत्रनिर्विघ्नकर्त्रीत्वं भव श्रीरामपूजिता ॥

Shami is a rare medicinal tree and it can grow in very harsh climatic conditions, and in poor or degraded soil. Roots of shami can grow down as deep as 35 meters in search of water.Being a Legume, it adds nitrogen to the soil and increases its fertility. Shami the sacred plant is the beloved tree of Lord Rama & the protector of the arms of Pandavas during their one year long "Agyaat Vaas". Shami protects human beings from the bad forces of Shani, and the symbol of victory in all walks of life … Shami samyate papam …”, Ayurvedic Uses:Shami is an important medicinal plant. Ayurveda recommends it for the treatment of a number of ailments and iseases like mental disorder, Schizophrenia, respiratory tract infection, excessive heat, herpes, loose motion, leucorrhoea etc. but different parts of the plant are used for different purposes. The extract of leaves of shami tree has been reported to kill intestinal parasitic worms. Its extract is reported to be useful in the treatment of leprosy also.The methanolic extract of shami leaves has anti-inflamatory activities.The pods and roots of the plant have been reported to possess astringent properties, and are used for the treatment of dysentery. Flowers of shami when mixed with sugar, are eaten by women during pregnancy as a safeguard against miscarriage. The bark of SHAMI is used in Ayurvedic formulations for its medicinal benefits in ailments like: Diarrhea, Anorexia, Piles, Rheumatoid Arthritis, Asthma, Chronic cough & minor Skin diseases. Pods are indicated un Uro-genital conditions.
